Abstract

Infant growth during the first six months of life is a key indicator of the success in meeting a child’s nutritional needs and health status. Exclusive breastfeeding is a recommended nutritional intervention to support optimal infant growth; however, its coverage remains uneven. This study aimed to analyze the effect of exclusive breastfeeding on infant growth at the Ternate City General Hospital. The study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach involving 30 infants aged 0–6 months selected using total sampling. Data on the history of exclusive breastfeeding were obtained through observation and review of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Records, while infant growth was assessed based on anthropometric indicators, particularly body weight. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, employing the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the majority of infants (73.3%) were exclusively breastfed. Mean body weight increased from 3,087.93 grams at birth to 3,534.83 grams at the time of measurement. The Wilcoxon test results indicated a significant association between exclusive breastfeeding and infant weight gain (p=0.000). These findings indicate that exclusive breastfeeding plays a crucial role in supporting infant growth in early life. Therefore, efforts to promote exclusive breastfeeding, provide lactation education starting during pregnancy, and ensure support from families and healthcare workers must continue to be strengthened to optimize infant growth and support the achievement of child health targets.
