Abstract

Patients recovering from anesthesia are at risk of falling because of residual anesthetic effects such as impaired consciousness, balance disturbance, muscle weakness, and disorientation, so family involvement is needed in fall prevention and management. This community service aimed to improve family knowledge about the prevention and management of fall risk in post-anesthesia patients at Emanuel Hospital Banjarnegara. The activity was conducted from 24 April to 9 May 2026 and involved 30 family members of post-anesthesia patients who were older than 18 years, acted as the primary caregivers, and gave informed consent. The method consisted of a pre-test, a 30-minute education session using lecture and discussion supported by a leaflet, and a post-test using a knowledge questionnaire. The data were described as frequencies and percentages. Most participants were older than 30 years (80%), and half had completed senior high school (50%). Before the education, 17 participants (56.7%) had sufficient knowledge and 13 (43.3%) had insufficient knowledge, and none had good knowledge. After the education, 26 participants (86.7%) had good knowledge and 4 (13.3%) had sufficient knowledge, and none remained in the insufficient category. All participants showed higher scores after the education. Education delivered through lecture, discussion, and a leaflet can improve family knowledge of fall prevention and management in post-anesthesia patients. The findings reflect short-term knowledge gains only, so skills training, follow-up of behavior, and integration into hospital services are recommended.
