Abstract

Anemia among pregnant women remains a maternal health problem that may increase the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications as well as impaired fetal growth and development. One factor associated with anemia is Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED), which reflects inadequate energy and nutrient reserves. This study aimed to determine the association between Chronic Energy Deficiency and anemia among pregnant women at Karangdowo Public Health Center. This quantitative study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 178 pregnant women selected using disproportionate simple random sampling. Secondary data were obtained from medical records for the January–December 2025 period, including Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed that 39 pregnant women (21.9%) were classified as having CED and 13 (7.3%) had anemia. Anemia was found in 17.9% of pregnant women with CED compared with 4.3% of those without CED. Fisher’s Exact Test showed a significant association between CED and anemia (p = 0.009). These findings indicate that maternal nutritional status based on MUAC is associated with anemia and support the integration of nutritional screening and hemoglobin monitoring into antenatal care.
