Abstract

Dementia is a condition characterized by a decline in memory, thinking ability, and functional abilities that can interfere with daily activities. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to help maintain cognitive function in older adults is puzzle play therapy. This study aimed to determine the application of nursing care for a patient with dementia and a nursing problem of impaired memory through puzzle play therapy in the working area of Kamaipura Public Health Center. This study used a case study method with a nursing care approach for an older adult with impaired memory. Puzzle play therapy was administered regularly for 10–15 minutes, three times a week, in the morning. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and observation of the client's responses during the intervention. The assessment of Mr. H, aged 75 years, showed impaired memory characterized by frequent forgetfulness in storing personal belongings, inability to identify the day and date, and difficulty remembering the names of newly acquainted people. The initial MMSE score was 18. After the implementation of puzzle play therapy, on the third day the client was able to identify the current date and day, remember his current age, and recall activities that had just been performed. The MMSE score increased to 21. The implementation of puzzle play therapy demonstrated an improvement in cognitive function and can help address memory impairment in older adults with dementia. Puzzle play therapy can be used as a non-pharmacological intervention in gerontological nursing care.
